OVERALL OBJECTIVES: The overall objective is to provide the participant with practical and clinically relevant information. Upon completion of this CME activity, the physician or healthcare provider should be able to describe the current approach to formulating differential diagnoses, diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive management of the various disciplines presented.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES FOR EACH TOPIC
TOPIC 1As the World Turns: Peripheral Vertigo in the ED - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1.Review the common causes of peripheral vertigo.
2.Appreciate the pathophysiology of benign positional vertigo.
3.Discuss how to perform various diagnostic tests in the evaluation of patients with peripheral vertigo.
4.Discover how to perform various therapeutic maneuvers, such as the Epley maneuver, in the treatment of patients with benign positional vertigo.

TOPIC 2Women and Coronary Artery Disease - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1.Describe how coronary risk factors affect women.
2.Outline a strategy for evaluating chest pain in women.
3.Identify the different clinical profiles of men and women with acute myocardial infarction.
4.Assess the risks and benefits of therapeutic modalities in women with coronary disease.

TOPIC 3Diseases of the Aorta - Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm, Acute Aortic Syndromes - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1.Define the lethality of aortic rupture and dissection.
2.Describe screening for and management of patients with aortic aneurysms.
3.Recognize acute aortic dissection and characterize those at risk for this potentially lethal disease.

TOPIC 4Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1.Describe the epidemiology of MRSA.
2.Describe important infections caused by MRSA.
3.Discuss and review risk factors and outcomes associated with MRSA.
4.Explain control and treatment of MRSA.

TOPIC 5Community Acquired Pneumonia - We will review the diagnosis and treatment of this common disorder with emphasis on the published guidelines. Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1.Categorize patients with respect to severity of illness.
2.Develop a strategy to triage patients - outpatient therapy, hospitalize or ICU.
3.Characterize the different pathogens that commonly cause community acquired pneumonia.
4.Identify the current status of diagnostic work-up including the use of cultures, gram stains, serology and bronchoscopy. We will emphasize a cost effective approach.
5.Demonstrate how to properly use antibiotics for community acquired pneumonia. We will discuss both old and new agents.
Numerous cases will be presented with chest x-rays and gram stains to illustrate important teaching points.

TOPIC 6The Alphabet Soup of Viral Hepatitis - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1.Describe and characterize the 5 known types of viral hepatitis (A through E). Similarities and differences will be stressed, particularly the risks to develop chronic infection, the complications of chronic infection, and treatment.
2.Recognize hepatitis clinically and will reinforce their ability to interpret hepatitis serologies.
3.Select appropriate patients for new treatment options available to some patients with chronic disease. Specific items covered include:
a.Clinical syndromes of acute and chronic hepatitis.
b.Serologic diagnosis.
c.Complications of chronic hepatitis and newer treatment options.

TOPIC 7Osteoporosis: Evaluation and Treatment - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1.Describe the pathophysiology and epidemiology of osteoporosis.
2.Describe the role of bone mineral density measurement in the diagnosis of osteoporosis.
3.Describe the various nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic treatments for osteoporosis.
