OVERALL OBJECTIVES: The overall objective is to provide the participant with practical and clinically relevant information. Upon completion of this CME activity, the physician or healthcare provider should be able to describe the current approach to formulating differential diagnoses, diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive management of the various disciplines presented.

NEEDS STATEMENT: This course will teach appropriate physical exams, diagnosis and treatment of skeletal trauma, LBP, common fractures and painful extremity and joint disorders. The specialty of Orthopedics is of great importance to all EM and Primary Care practices, urgent care settings and to any practitioner in a position to deal with the diagnosis and disposition of Orthopedic injuries or disorders. Therefore, a need exists for practitioners in these clinical settings to review and be knowledgeable in their physical exam, x-ray interpretation, diagnostic and treatment/referral skills relative to these issues. This activity will provide an excellent overview of practical approaches and solutions to the problems presented.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
TOPIC 1Skeletal Trauma - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1.Demonstrate an understanding of what constitutes proper radiographic evaluation of skeletal trauma.
2.Recognize the limitations of plain radiographs in demonstrating acute fractures.
3.Determine which additional imaging studies may be used when plain radiographic studies fail to demonstrate a suspected fracture.
4.Describe fractures using proper terminology.

TOPIC 2Common Fractures - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1.Review bone metabolism and repair.
2.Discuss common fractures.
3.Become familiar with the various treatment recommendations presented.

TOPIC 3Evaluation and Treatment of the Painful Shoulder in the Primary Care Setting - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1.Review the anatomy of the shoulder in relation to common mechanisms of injury.
2.Describe and utilize key historical and physical examination skills needed to accurately diagnose common causes of shoulder pain in the primary care setting.
3.Describe the initial management of common shoulder injuries.

TOPIC 4Low Back Pain - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1.Enhance cost-effectiveness by using validated indications for imaging studies.
2.Recognize the red flags you do not want to miss and appreciate their significance.
3.Adopt current management standards.

TOPIC 5Evaluation of the Painful Knee in the Primary Care Setting - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1.Recognize key historical features to help distinguish between common causes of knee pain in the primary care setting.
2.Demonstrate physical examination skills utilized in the diagnosis of common causes of knee pain.
3.Describe the treatment of common knee injuries in the primary care setting and determine which injuries require orthopedic consultation.

TOPIC 6MRI of Large Joints - Knee, Shoulder and Hip - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1.Define commonly used terminology in radiographic reports related to musculoskeletal MRI.
2.Differentiate when to order shoulder MRI with and without arthrography.
3.Outline appropriate indication for large joint MRI examinations.

TOPIC 7Ankle Injuries Masquerading as Sprains - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1.Review important anatomical landmarks.
2.Discuss clinical presentation and diagnosis of ankle injuries that are NOT sprains.
3.Develop a practical approach to the management of these injuries.
