SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES FOR EACH TOPIC
TOPIC 1Coronary Artery Disease - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1.Describe the common presenting symptom complexes of patients.
2.Describe the diagnostic evaluation of a patient with chest pain.
3.Enumerate current medication and surgical treatment options.

TOPIC 2Perioperative Cardiac Evaluation and Management - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1.Identify what the surgical team wants to know.
2.Characterize the cardiovascular effects of anesthesia and surgery.
3.Identify the elements of appropriate preoperative evaluation, including the role of non-invasive testing for coronary artery disease, using national guidelines.
4.Identify perioperative measures which may reduce the risk of cardiac complications.

TOPIC 3Sudden Cardiac Death, Bradycardia and Atrioventricular Block - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1.Identify which patients need additional evaluation and treatment of ventricular arrhythmias.
2.Describe which patients need additional evaluation and treatment of cardiac conduction abnormalities.
3.Recognize indications for permanent electronic pacemakers.

TOPIC 4"Nuts and Bolts" of Pulmonary Function Testing - We will review the “nuts and bolts” of pulmonary function testing in an easy to understand fashion with an emphasis on outpatient office spirometry. Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1.Identify the components of PFTs including spirometry, lung volumes and diffusion.
2.Characterize the indications for PFTs.
3.Describe when bronchodilator and bronchoprovocation studies are useful.
4.Develop a stepwise approach to PFT interpretation and be able to distinguish common patterns.
5.Recognize different patterns of upper airway obstruction.
A variety of actual PFTs will be presented for interpretation and review.

TOPIC 5Asthma - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1.Describe the epidemiology of asthma.
2.List the various modalities to diagnose asthma.
3.List the different treatments for asthma, both pharmacological and environmental.

TOPIC 6Preoperative Pulmonary Evaluation - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1.Identify patient and procedure-related risk factors for postoperative pulmonary complications.
2.Appreciate the limited role of preoperative spirometry.
3.Apply strategies to reduce the risk of postoperative pulmonary complications.

TOPIC 7Drugs and the Nervous System - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1.Identify the common effects of prescribed drugs on the nervous system.
2.Identify the common effects of illicit drugs on the nervous system.
3.Recognize the common neurologic complications of alcoholism.
4.Recognize the common neurologic side effects of antidopaminergic medication.

TOPIC 8Laboratory and Radiological Tests in Rheumatology - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1.Appreciate the importance of synovial fluid analysis.
2.Appreciate the use and limitations of laboratory testing.

TOPIC 9Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) - A Primary Care Perspective - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1.Describe the pathophysiology of arteriosclerosis, the most common cause of PAD.
2.Identify patients at increased risk for PAD.
3.Perform a focused history and physical examination to assess for PAD.
4.Have an appreciation of the role of ancillary testing.
5.Develop a plan for management of patients with PAD utilizing evidence-based guidelines for exercise, medications and revascularization.

TOPIC 10Improving Compliance - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1.Identify the patient/physician communication issues that enhance compliance.
2.Enumerate techniques that they may use in their own practice to increase compliance.
3.Compare and contrast the follow-up plan for each STI.

TOPIC 11Seizures and Epilepsy - Management - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1.Differentiate among the many available anticonvulsant medications.
2.Determine when treatment with anticonvulsant medication is warranted.
3.Recognize and treat status epilepticus.
4.Evaluate and manage problems confronted by women with epilepsy.

TOPIC 12Evaluation of the Patient with Syncope - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1.Discuss the various etiologies of syncope.
2.Use clues in the history and physical as well as simple office testing to risk-stratify patients.
3.Develop a plan for appropriate use of additional testing in patients with syncope.
4.Gain an appreciation of the role of lifestyle measures, medication, and more invasive measures to prevent recurrent syncope.

TOPIC 13Vasculitis - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1.Describe the clinical manifestations of the various vasculitides and the appropriate diagnostic evaluation.
2.Describe treatment modalities used in vasculitis.

TOPIC 14Gout and Pseudogout in the Elderly - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1.Recognize the unique characteristics of gout in the elderly.
2.Define the factors in the elderly that impact the presentation and treatment of gout.
3.Describe the Allopurinol hypersensitivity syndrome and predisposing factors.
4.Describe the clinical manifestations of calcium pyrophosphate deposition.
5.Describe the polarized microscopic findings for uric acid and CPPD crystals.

TOPIC 15Libby Zion’s Lesson: Serotonin Syndrome and P450 Drug Interactions - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1.Define the clinical features of common drug interactions.
2.List the features of serotonin syndrome and distinguish from other Neurologic drug toxicities.
3.Recognize potential drug interactions and determine how to predict them.
4.Apply a simple clinical algorithm for anticipating and avoiding drug interactions.

TOPIC 16Routine Adult Care - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1.Identify the current primary care guidelines for recommended screening tests for adults.
2.List the various recommended immunizations for adults.
