OVERALL OBJECTIVES: The overall objective is to provide the participant with practical and clinically relevant information. Upon completion of this CME activity, the physician or healthcare provider should be able to describe the current approach to formulating differential diagnoses, diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive management of the various disciplines presented.
| SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES FOR EACH TOPIC
| | TOPIC 1 | The Alphabet Soup of Viral Hepatitis - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
| 1. | Describe and characterize the 5 known types of viral hepatitis (A through E). Similarities and differences will be stressed, particularly the risks to develop chronic infection, the complications of chronic infection, and treatment.
| | 2. | Recognize hepatitis clinically and will reinforce their ability to interpret hepatitis serologies.
| | 3. | Select appropriate patients for new treatment options available to some patients with chronic disease. Specific items covered include:
| a. | Clinical syndromes of acute and chronic hepatitis.
| | b. | Serologic diagnosis.
| | c. | Complications of chronic hepatitis and newer treatment options.

| | TOPIC 2 | Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
| 1. | Describe the epidemiology of MRSA.
| | 2. | Describe important infections caused by MRSA.
| | 3. | Discuss and review risk factors and outcomes associated with MRSA.
| | 4. | Explain control and treatment of MRSA.

| | TOPIC 3 | Health Advice for International Travel - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
| 1. | List infectious complications associated with global travel.
| | 2. | Analyze a travel itinerary for potential health risks.
| | 3. | Counsel the traveler and provide strategies to reduce the risks of traveler’s diarrhea and malaria.
| | 4. | Prescribe appropriate vaccines and medications. Specific areas to be covered include:
| a. | Pre-travel.
| i. | Immunizations;
| | ii. | Malaria prophylaxis;
| | iii. | Medications.

| | b. | Travel over.
| | c. | During travel.
| i. | Safe food and water;
| | ii. | Traveler’s diarrhea;

| | TOPIC 4 | Influenza and Pandemic Influenza - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
| 1. | Describe the epidemiology, infection control precautions and other preventive measures related to influenza infections.
| | 2. | Identify the role of influenza vaccine and antiviral therapy as well as supportive measures in the prevention and treatment of influenza.
| | 3. | Discuss the potential for pandemic influenza.
| | 4. | Identify key issues of Bioemergency preparedness for the primary care practitioner.

| | TOPIC 5 | Newer Antibacterial Agents - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
| 1. | Relate the antibacterial spectrum of activity.
| | 2. | Describe the pharmacology of the agents.
| | 3. | List the indications and dosing recommendations.
| | 4. | Identify the side effects, adverse reactions and drug interactions.

| | TOPIC 6 | Immunizations for Adults - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
| 1. | Differentiate between myths and facts about vaccine administration.
| | 2. | List indications, contra-indications, efficacy, and side effects of adult immunizations.
| | 3. | Identify immunizations indicated for different risk groups such as health care workers.

| | TOPIC 7 | Update on Antimicrobial Resistance - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
| 1. | Describe the pattern of emergence of resistance to certain infecting bacteria.
| | 2. | Identify epidemiology that may indicate potential resistance among the organisms discussed, such as:
| a. | Pneumococci;
| | b. | Enterococci;
| | c. | Gram negative bacilli.

| | 3. | Summarize the approach to current therapeutic regimens while considering resistance.
|
