SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES FOR EACH TOPIC
TOPIC 1Evaluation and Management of Pediatric Head Trauma - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1.Explain the initial approach to the child with a head injury.
2.Distinguish between those children at low and high risk for intracranial injury.
3.Identify an appropriate evaluation and treatment strategy for children with head injury of varying degrees of severity.

TOPIC 2Orthopedic Conditions Above the Hip - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1.Diagnose the Salter-Harris classification of fractures in the pediatric patient.
2.Initially manage fractures of the upper extremity and recognize when to refer to an Orthopedic Surgeon.

TOPIC 3Managing Animal Bites - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1.Identify those bites that are at particular risk of infection.
2.Summarize the arguments for and against the use of prophylactic antibiotics in specific bite wounds.
3.Match specific infecting organisms with the biting animal.

TOPIC 4Accidents Will Happen? Evaluation of Suspected Physical Abuse in Children - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1.Recognize common presentations of non-accidental trauma.
2.Plan the evaluation of the child with suspected non-accidental trauma.
3.Apply the principles of correct documentation for forensic purposes.
